Construction work lasted more than 100 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1785<\/strong> The two monumental staircases designed by Esprit-Joseph Brun are completed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1866<\/strong> The new H\u00f4tel-Dieu is inaugurated by Napoleon III on 15 November.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1963<\/strong> A decree dated 14 October registers the facades and their exterior galleries, the roofing and the two staircases in the inventory of Historic Monuments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1993<\/strong> The last patients leave the hospital; the H\u00f4tel-Dieu becomes a training centre for medical staff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2006<\/strong> The H\u00f4tel-Dieu hospital closes its doors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2007<\/strong> Acquisition of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu by the City of Marseille. The AXA Real Estate group acquires a 99-year lease and invests 120 million euros to give it a true metamorphosis: building the future while respecting the past.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2010<\/strong> Start of construction works combining modernity, technology and sustainable development requirements, while preserving a venerable protected monument.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2013<\/strong> Official opening of the InterContinental Marseille \u2013 Hotel Dieu, a crowned 5-star luxury establishment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2016<\/strong> 150th anniversary of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2023<\/strong> The hotel celebrates its 10th anniversary!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>12th century: The remains of a 12th-century chapel are buried beneath the hotel gardens, whose Roman mosaic floor dates from the 1st century BCE, now visible in our Cultural Space (ground floor).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you wish to deepen your knowledge of the history of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu, a book is available from the concierge desk at a price of 39 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marseille.intercontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/InterContinental-Marseille-Hotel-Dieu-Notre-Histoire-1024x818.jpg\" alt=\"Rehabilitation construction site of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu in Marseille, facade under restoration with scaffolding, conversion into the InterContinental\" class=\"wp-image-206\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marseille.intercontinental.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/InterContinental-Marseille-Hotel-Dieu-Notre-Histoire-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ancient architectural plan of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu in Marseille, 18th-century historical document showing the layout of the buildings\" class=\"wp-image-207\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading mt-5\">Architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the elegant exterior renovation of the InterContinental Marseille \u2013 Hotel Dieu was designed by architects <strong>Anthony B\u00e9chu<\/strong> and <strong>Tangram agency<\/strong>, its interior architecture was entrusted to <strong>Jean-Philippe Nuel<\/strong>, one of the world&#8217;s leading references in luxury hotel design, whose creations are distinguished by their diversity and refinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main facade and the two staircases adorned with beautiful wrought ironwork are listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments (ISMH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pioneering environmental project, the InterContinental Marseille \u2013 Hotel Dieu is the very first hotel restructuring to receive High Environmental Quality (HQE) certification.
