New exhibition : Edmond Astruc
We are delighted to present the new exhibition hosted in our lobby “Edmond Astruc” by the Association of Friends of the Painter and Aviator Edmond Astruc.
This free exhibition will be open from 2 September to 17 November 2025.
Edmond Astruc (1878–1977) was a painter from Marseille who was committed to depicting the landscapes of Provence and the Mediterranean with a masterful use of colour and light.
Attracted to art from an early age, he studied at the Beaux-Arts while working in his family’s tannery. A passionate adventurer, he also distinguished himself in aviation and motor sports before becoming a test pilot during the First World War. After the war, he devoted himself entirely to painting, exhibiting regularly in France and abroad.
As a member of the Académie de Marseille, he continued his work until the end of his life, remaining faithful to his palette of vibrant blues and his deep attachment to his native region. His work, marked by an azure palette, the ‘Astruc blue’, is a visual celebration of the sky, the sea and the light of Provence.
“This period of my life spent in aviation had rejuvenated and refined my vision. I returned to the clarity and luminous atmosphere of my early years as a painter, when at the School of Fine Arts, the director and painting teacher Alphonse Moutte would look at my painting and say, “Here is the painter of spring”, or when I sought the smoky atmosphere of the studio, “the painter of fog”.”
